You're meant to use that time to work on leveling up another group of 4, and collecting resources for upgrades to your buildings and your roster.

I cant skip, so the only workaround is to recruit a lvl 0, send him in without any gear so he can die and I can progress. Speaking of design-flaws, why on earth is there no way to just skip a turn? After every encounter I need to send my guys in for healing, removing diseases and what not. At this point I dont see how its possible to defeat lvl 7 dungeons (I think thats cap?) considering max hero lvl is 6 and you apparently need to be 2 lvls above.
